CNC Custom Wooden Tray

CNC Custom Wooden Tray

CNC | Maker Hub 2024 Spring

For this tray I made, I was inspired to create a designated spot on my desk for various small items, like erasers, hairpins, batteries, etc. So, I crafted a tray measuring 150 by 200 mm. To enhance its appearance, I designed flower patterns on the inside with an easy storage function. To make it visually easier to differentiate between the two flowers, one is deeper than the other. In the bottom right corner, I added the phrase “don't worry be happy” as a reminder to myself to relax.

In the process of making the tray, I first completed the initial blueprint. However, before moving forward, David helped me improve the blueprint, making the production process more efficient and logical. For example, he suggested replacing a small bit with a larger one. The outcome would be the same, but it would save twenty minutes of production time. Initially, I also inaccurately set up the "face" of the product, not choosing to chisel the entire flat surface correctly, which confused me during the mock production of my blueprint 1.0. Overall, this project deepened my understanding of sustainable making, a concept we discussed in class. There are many ways to achieve the final goal and result, but we should focus on finding and choosing the method that consumes the least resources, whether tangible materials or intangible energy and time.
