Elephant's Crossbody Bag

Elephant's Crossbody Bag

Sewing | Maker Hub 2024 Spring

I’ve crafted a small crossbody bag as a gift for my elephant doll, which has been a source of immense comfort and laughter since its arrival at my home. Despite having never owned anything of its own (if we don’t count its siblings as “items”), I felt it was time to create something just for it. The bag is meant to carry anything it might need, especially useful when moving.

After measuring the appropriate strap length and sketching a design, I realized that sewing a small bag was more challenging than expected. My initial idea to place the zipper at the front rather than the top was not feasible with fabric cutting alone, prompting me to simplify the design to a basic rectangular shape.

The bag is gray, with a lining featuring an adorable cat pattern, reflecting the elephant’s cool appearance yet warm and loving nature. To fit the pattern properly, I cut the fabric into four pieces and sewed them together, centering an elephant totem on the bag. For the strap, I cut two long fabric pieces, folded them with ribbed fabric strips inside, and stitched them closed. After turning the strap inside out and reinserting the ribbed strips, I ensured the style matched and the strap was secure before attaching it to the bag.

The elephant loved the gift!!

It can comfortably fit some of his small friends

And he particularly liked the cat print inside:)
