Project Overview

Sri Lanka is the world's fourth-largest producer of tea. In 1995, it was the world's leading exporter of tea (rather than producer), with 23% of the total world export, and Sri Lanka ranked second on tea export earnings in 2020 after China. However, Sri Lanka’s social-ecological systems are under stress after decades of political unrest, natural disasters, and the growing impacts of climate change. Therefore, the project's objective is to use ICT to enhance the adoption of sustainable farming by tea smallholder farmers in Sri Lanka.

The Teaps app targets tea smallholder owners/managers and laborers, streamlining the green leaf collection system, managing the skilled labor pool, and facilitating farmer-centered technology sharing.

The app also features a socio-economic and farm-level database that helps monitor the uptake of sustainable practices and resource use. This database can be used to identify areas where farmers need additional support and training to adopt sustainable practices.

In addition to supporting sustainable farming practices, the Teaps app also creates job opportunities for youth in the region by managing a skilled labor pool and matching the demand and supply of labor. This not only benefits the tea industry but also helps address youth unemployment in Sri Lanka.

The Teaps app has the potential to transform Sri Lanka's tea industry by promoting sustainable farming practices, supporting youth employment, and stimulating economic growth.

Overall, the Teaps app aims to improve the livelihoods of tea smallholder farmers, support youth employment, promote sustainable farming practices, and enhance the tea industry in Sri Lanka through the use of technology and innovative solutions.

The functions include:

  • Streamline the green leaf collection system, manage the skilled labor pool, follow-up training, and input supply.

  • Develop a socio-economic and farm level database to monitor the uptake of sustainable practices and resource use.

  • Support farmers' uptake of sustainable farming practices and facilitate farmer-centered technology sharing by facilitating follow-up training and linking best practice farmers with neighboring farmers.

  • Create job opportunities for youth through managing a skilled labor pool by matching demand and supply of labor in the region.

  • Create opportunities for local entrepreneurs as input suppliers for the tea smallholders especially compost, manure, and planting materials.

The Further Improving Direction

  • Expend the audience groups to tea collectors, tea factories, fertilizer producers, and extension specialists.

  • Promote tea tourism and build the capacity of the local community to establish tea-tourism ventures.
